This property is more than 100 years old and being made up of two mills, used to work day and night to grind the grain for local villagers.
They would bring their bags of grain to the mill and a couple of days later would come and collect their sacks of milled grain. The miller was never paid in money but in kind and he would either sell the grain he was given at market or use it to feed his family.
In the past the river, which worked the mill, was full with trout and eel. Today it remains uncontaminated as no waste is thrown into it and water is taken from it for a nearby village, Cudillero.
A few metres above the river are some gold mines that were exploded by the French, and their entrances can still be seen.
In 1936, during the Civil War, fighters would come down to the house for shelter, rest a bit and then shoot at one village and then another and the canon shots would pass just over the roof of the house.
Lighting was provided by gas lamps, oil lamps and lanterns with candles.
Once the corn had been harvested the skins had to be shed so during this time the people from the village of San Cristóbal would come down to the mill and work all night.
As the people were old and had a lot of life experience, while they skinned the corn they would tell stories, jokes and sing.
Once the work was finished they would eat chestnuts cooked in sweet wine. As there was no television this is how they spent their nights.
These houses in the country were surrounded by all types of fruit trees, including apple trees, pear trees and fig trees, as well as what was grown, they were totally self-sufficient.
This water mill is located in an idyllic spot in a peaceful forest, next to a river and can only be reached by 4X4 or on foot. Water is provided by the river and for electricity some form of self-sufficient energy could be fitted; solar panels, hydroelectricity etc…
Nearby Cudillero is a pretty coastal town and may remind those of you with small children of ‘Balamory’ with its different coloured houses sitting by the sea.
Size: 10,500m plot with the property 100m2
